Brunei teacher wins Princess Maha Chakri Award

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN - The integrity of Brunei’s education sector garnered praise in Bangkok, Thailand, thanks to the meritorious service of Cikgu Lim Soh Ngo, a teacher from Duli Pengiran Muda Al-Muhtadee Billah College (Maktab Duli).

The exemplary teacher became the icon of the Sultanate’s future-oriented academic approach and a model for educators in the Southeast Asia region as she was bestowed with the coveted Princess Maha Chakri Award in recognition of her professional work in teaching Chemistry.

She received the award from Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn during the 2nd Princess Maha Chakri Award Ceremony held in Bangkok yesterday.

Aside from her role as an A-Level Chemistry teacher at Maktab Duli, Cikgu Ngo has worked in various capacities in her college including mentoring other teachers and an advisor to the Staff Professional Development Division.

She also actively participates in various professional activities including sharing her expertise by conducting workshops. Cikgu Ngo is a very passionate and dedicated teacher, having taught Chemistry for 27 years. As a testament to her excellent service, she was awarded the Excellent Service Medal in 2011 and the Brunei Darussalam Excellent Teacher Award in 2012 by His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam.

Eleven award recipients (including Lim) from the Southeast Asia Ministers of Education Organisation (SEAMEO) member countries each received a medal, a certificate and a cheque of US$10,000 for their respective contribution to education.

During the award ceremony, Cikgu Ngo also gave a presentation of her achievements to an audience of about 400. While in Bangkok, Cikgu Ngo and fellow awardees visited the Royal Crematorium for His Majesty the late King Bhumibol Adulyadej.

The Princess Maha Chakri Award is a tribute to Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn for her contributions and outstanding achievements. The award honours highly dedicated teachers in Southeast Asia whose accomplishments make significant contributions to education and human development and who deserve international recognition; supports and promotes development of the teaching profession and educational development and also aims at strengthening international relations in the field of education.

Also present at the award ceremony was the Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Education Datin Paduka Dr Hajah Romaizah binti Haji Mohd Salleh.
