The College of Music hosts the Thailand International Jazz Conference
Jazz musicians, both local and international, will be in Nakhon Pathom this weekend, as Mahidol University hosts the fourth edition of the Thailand International Jazz Conference (TIJC).
The event, which runs from Friday to Sunday at the Musica Arboretum on the university’s Salaya campus, aims to develop Thailand’s academic and performing prowess in jazz and, as in previous years, is bringing in experts to perform as well as share their academic views on various aspects of the genre.
“The TIJC offers participants both happiness and knowledge”, says Dr Sugree Charoensook, dean of Mahidol’s College of Music, adding that the festival is recognised by the jazz community for its entertainment-cum-education style.
Besides dazzling Bangkok audiences with their performances, leading jazz artists will be facilitating workshops too, turning the conference into the world’s largest jazz classroom.
The TIJC has three parts: concerts, education and a solo performance competition. The concert segment, always a highlight, sees the coming together of world-renowned jazz artists from the genre’s mother country, the United States. This year’s stars are Benny Green, one of the world’s best jazz pianists, New York saxophonist Marcus Strickland and Californian trumpeter David Hart. Together with pianist Taylor Eigsti and saxophonist Robert Knop, these performers will be inviting audiences to experience and share their world of jazz.
Alongside these titans are Unit Asia, a gathering of leading jazz musicians from Japan, Malaysia and Thailand and featuring Koh Mr Saxman. Other big names include saxophonist Tewan Sapsanyakorn and his band, Denny and Friends, OMAH and Pomelo Town.
“I hope the TIJC will bring happy smiles to the faces of all Thais and revitalise them after last year’s great flood,” says Sugree.
