With a 24-megapixel front camera, the new Vivo V7+ is ideal for the selfie obsessed
The new flagship phone from Chinese technology giant Vivo, the Vivo V7+ has one of the best selfie cameras on the market as well as a Hi-Fi chip that turns it into a top-quality music player.
Indeed, with that 24-megapixel resolution and an f/2.0 aperture lens for lowlight environments, the V7+ has gone way beyond the usual smartphone, focusing, in every sense of the word, on a selfie-centric gizmo that bows to today’s trends. Add in the Face Beauty 7.0 and Portrait modes and those individual and group shots are amazing,
Face Beauty 7.0, which has been enhanced from Vivo’s popular Face Beauty 6.0, uses a new algorithm to brighten up and offer a more even complexion in your selfies. With this mode, you’ll look natural and beautiful, even in dimly lit environments. You can also use it from video calls.
The Portrait Mode makes your selfie shots look professional, with blurred background accentuating the sharpness of the face, just like a portrait taken with DSLR camera.
The rear camera is no slouch either, with 16-megapixel resolution, f/2.0 aperture lends and a 64MP Ultra HD mode that merges four frames into one shot to create astonishingly detailed images.
Music fans after the best listening experience will love the Vivo 7+ as it uses a Hi-Fi AK4376A premium audio chip from Asahi Kasei Microdevices to enhance the music quality.
The Vivo 7+ also comes with its own music player app, iMusic. I tested using the phone by playing FLAC 24bit/192kHz High-Resolution Audio music files with Sony’s MDR1ABT Hi-Res Audio headphones and was impressed by the good details of the instruments and the powerful bass.
The Vivo V7+ has 64 gigabytes of internal storage so it can store a lot of large FLAC 24bit/192 kHz files. If that’s s not enough, you can expand the storage with a microSD card by up to 256GB using a dedicated slot instead of sharing the second nano SIM slot. So, you can both expand the storage and use two SIMs at the same time.
Vivo claims to be first brand to use a dedicated Hi-Fi chip in smartphones. I wasn’t particularly familiar with the brand before the test and was surprised to learn that the company was founded back in founded 2009 and is an official sponsor of 2018 FIFA World Cup. It currently ranks fifth on the IDG list of "20162017 Leading Global Smartphone Brands".
The Vivo V7+ is available in Thailand in Matte Black and Champagne Gold colours. I tried the Matte Black one and like the solemn look and the strong feel.
The smartphone comes with 5.99-inch IPS display. Its resolution of 1440x720 pixels is not outstanding as it is less than Full HD resolution. But the display is offered in “FullView” format that uses the slim bezel to offer a 5.99-inch view from the same body footprint.
The slimmer bezel design allows the V7+ to offer a screen-to-body ratio of 84.4 per cent and the display is offered in 18:9 format, which is 12.5 per cent bigger than the traditional 16:9 format.
The V7+ is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 625 octacore 64bit processor running at 1.8 GHz. Although it is not powered by the superfast CPU, the V7+ has good performance. I found that touch screen and menus were responsive and apps did not slow down even when used in dualscreen mode.
The V7+ has 4 GB of working memory or RAM and it runs on Vivo’s Funtouch OS 3.2 that is based on Android 7.1 operating system.
It has fast LTE 4G connection. I tried it on TrueMove H LTE network and found that the connection speed was fast. Apps were quickly downloaded and my snapshots were backed up to my Google Photos cloud storage in a snap.
I used Ookla Speedtest app to measure the connection speed and the phone achieved a download speed of 85.88 Mbps and upload speed of 30.77 Mbps.
I also had fun with the Funtouch OS 3.2, which comes with several useful functions, including Smart Split 3.0, App Clone and Face Access.
The Smart Split 3.0 allows you to divide the display into dual screen by simply sliding three fingers down so that you can use two apps at once. Do be warned though that not all apps support this function. Currently it supports video streaming, Facebook, Line, Messages, Viber, WeChat, WhatsApp, BBM, Play Movies & TV, YouTube, Video, MX Player and VLC for Android. More will probably follow.
The App Clone is useful if you have two accounts for certain chat services or social media accounts. It allows you to use two accounts at the same time. So far, it supports WhatsApp, Line, BBM, WeChat, Zalo and Viber.
The Face Access function lets you use unlock your phone with your face. The Face Access scans multiple areas of the face for identifying the phone owner and unlocks it immediately once you wake the screen.
The V7+ also comes with a fingerprint reader if you prefer this method for unlocking your phone.
And best of all, it’s reasonably priced, retailing for just Bt11,990.
