Lightweight, foldable and packing great bass, the new phones from Dr Dre are manna for the ears

BEATS BY Dr Dre Pro is a pair of over-ear headphones with excellent sound quality and powerful bass response.
Despite featuring an ear cup housing and headband with a strong and durable aluminium gunmetal frame, the Beats Pro phones are surprisingly light, weighing in at just 400 grammes.
The aluminium housing also adds panache to the look of the headphones, which are available here in black only though anyone buying them abroad can opt for the silver option.
With dual audio ports, one at the bottom of each ear cup, Beats Pro are designed for sharing. The ports are linked by a DaisyChain connection, thus allowing each to function as both an input port from your music player and output port to send audio to your friend’s headphones.
The headphones have DJ-style rotatable ear cups that can be folded and tucked into the provided carrying pouch. Or you can rotate up just one ear cup to listen the music using the other ear to listen to the ambient sounds around you.
The heavily padded, pivoting ear cups minimise noises around you ensuring an totally immersive experience.
The pack comes with two audio cables. The first is a 4.2mm coiled cable with 3.5mm twist lock plug for locking to one of the ear cups.
The cable is made by Monster, which is a well-known high-quality audio cables maker. Beats also provides a quarter-inch audio adapter for the headphones so you can listen to music from a high-end stereo system.
The second cable is for using with a smartphone and boasts an in-line remote and microphone. The cable is designed to control iOS devices. When using with an iPhone or iPad, the in-line remote allows you to skip track forward or backward or scan forward and backward, for example.
I tested Beats Pro with the iPad Pro 9.7-inch and Sony NW-A25 Walkman Hi-Res Audio player. I found that Beats Pro reproduced music with good clarity of highs and mids and a strong bass response.
For example, when I listened to The Eagles’ “Hotel California”, the sound of the lead guitar and percussion, especially the cymbals, was outstanding while the bass guitar and bass drums were deep and powerful.
When I listened to Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven” on the iPad Pro, the music was very enjoyable with great details of all the instruments and outstanding vocals. The guitar and organ intro sounded clear and the drums and bass guitar kicked in powerfully as the song progressed.
Although Beats Pro’s ear cups and headband are softly cushioned, the aluminium part of the headband has perhaps a little too much pressure for comfort so if you listen to music for a long time, you may feel uncomfortable.
Beats Pro is distributed in Thailand exclusively by for Bt17,500. True customers with both True Black and Red cards are eligible for a 10-per-cent discount and can purchase the phones in 10 interest-free instalments. This special offer runs through the end of July.
