The Thai flag is 100 years old this year and Siam Center is marking the occasion with a campaign called “Idea Avenue Presents the Colours of Siam”.

The shopping mall, Total Access Communication (Dtac) and Canon Marketing are gearing up for National Flag Day on September 28, recruiting a posse of celebrities to promote activities and products under the “Absolute Siam” concept right through October 31.

The tricolour flag was adopted in 1917, introduced by His Majesty King Vajiravudh (Rama VI) as a depiction of the land and its people (the red stripes), religion (white) and the monarchy (blue).

The “Colours of Siam” campaign will include a photography exhibition, fashion shows and a photo contest.

Anyone can enter the photo contest, in which creative and meaningful interpretations of the flag will be posted on the social media. There are separate categories for pictures taken with phones and those taken with proper cameras.

Entries must be posted by September 23 with the phrase “Siam Center Idea Avenue Presents Colors of Siam” (American spelling) and the hashtags #SiamCenter and #ColorsofSiam, along with a brief caption.

Prizes worth Bt200,000 await the winners, who’ll be judged by professional photographers led by Nat Prakobsantisuk, Tanakorn Suntornnantakij and Ajarn Amrit Chusuwan.

“This contest will make younger people more aware of the three pillars of Thai society – the nation, religion and the monarchy,” Nat says.

“It will also encourage rookie photographers to liberate their imagination and show their pride in the country in creative ways. The only condition is that the tricolour flag must be the main element in the photo and presented properly.”

National Artist Waranun Chutchawantipakorn and two other talented pro photographers, Wasan Pheungprasert and fashion specialist Punsiri Siriwetchapun, are organising the photo exhibition taking place in the mall’s first-floor Atrium 1 from September 7 to October 31.

During that same period in Atrium 2, 20 top Thai clothing designers will be presenting garments inspired by the colours of the flag. Participants will include Eight, Adhoc, Baking Soda, Fri27Nov, Garden Flynow III, Good Mixer, Greyhound, House of PB, Iconic, Milin, Pedz, Q Design and Play, Rotsaniyom White Label, Singha Life, Senada, Six PM, Tube Gallery and Wonder Anatomie.
