The nine defence volunteers on duty at a base in southern Pattani province escaped injury in a gun battle with suspected insurgents late Tuesday night.
The attackers opened fire on the base in the village of in Moo 6 in Panare district.
They and the volunteers exchanged gunfire for about 10 minutes before the assailants withdrew.
Panare police examining the scene on Wednesday morning found about a dozen spent shells in a forest behind the base.
Police believe the attackers were insurgents and would have crept nearer the base but were held back by barbed wire, so they opened fire from a considerable distance.
