A domesticated male gibbon was rescued on Tuesday after being found abandoned on a roadside in Prachuap Khiri Khan’s Pran Buri district.
Polrop Meesaming, an official at the Sawang Phaisarn Thammasathan Pran Buri foundation, said he was alerted at 10am that an apparently starving gibbon had been spotted sitting on the side of a road.
Polrop said that when officials from the foundation arrived at the spot, on Soi 18 in Tambon Khao Noi’s Moo 1 village, the animal walked up to them non-aggressively and let them carry and hug it.
He said the gibbon had probably been domesticated and that its owner had decided to release it, but it did not know how to find food.
The gibbon had apparently not eaten for several days, he said, adding that the foundation had contacted the Huay Sai Wildlife Sanctuary to take it for rehabilitation.
An official from the sanctuary said the gibbon is about five or six years old, and very tame. The official confirmed that the animal seemed not to have eaten for several days.
