The Yala Commerce Office has joined forces with other agencies to host a workshop for durian growers on Wednesday in a bid to help in the quality control of the produce for export and especially to cater for Alibaba's online supermarket as per the Thai government policy.
Yala Governor Anuchit Trakulmututa presided over the opening of the workshop for good agricultural practices for durian growers and how the durians would be frozen and of high quality. It was held at Yala Rama Hotel in Muang district and participants included 50 large-scale durian growers.
A memorandum of understanding for fruit purchases was signed between agriculture institutes and Pathum Thani-based Queen Frozen Fruit Co.
Yala Commerce Office head Nianuwa Sulaiman said more consumers had shifted to buying frozen durians. Farmers, which would supply frozen fruit factories, must be informed of techniques to ensure standards were maintained to fetch higher prices.
Yala reportedly grows at least 30,000 tonnes of durian per year.
