A tip-off to police resulted in a monk being arrested at a Chiang Mai temple after buying methamphetamine for his own use.

Police said the 24-year-old monk, whose lay name is Boonlert Jairakseriparp, was seen sneaking away from Wat Mueang Mang in Tambon Haiya, Muang Chiang Mai, late Monday night.

After he returned, they confronted him inside the temple and found nine methamphetamine pills in his possession, along with drug paraphernalia.

The temple’s abbot ordered the monk defrocked before he was taken to the police station.
