After a week of mounting claims of corruption and “brown paper bag” payments made to police by businesses in Patong, Kathu Police Station’s superintendent was named as acting superintendent at Patong Police Station on Tuesday.
Phuket Provincial Police Commander, Pol Maj Gen Teerapol Thipcharoen, signed the approval on Tuesday.
The move follows the transfer of several officers over the ongoing bribe scandal – principally involving the entertainment, beverage, restaurant and gambling industries – including former Patong superintendent, Pol Col Tassanai Oladirek.
Pol Col ML Pattanachak Chakrabhan will move to Patong as acting superintendent while Pol Col Chawalit Niemwadee from Phuket Police Station will replace him as the new superintendent at Kathu Police Station.
Pol Col Witoon Kongsudjai, Deputy Phuket provincial police commander, will closely monitor the work at Patong Police Station.
A submission to the Thai prime minister from local Facebook portal ‘Spotlight Phuket’ opened up a Pandora’s Box of long-term corruption, extortion and blackmail accusations between some Phuket police and local Patong businesses.
‘Spotlight Phuket’ estimates payments add up to about Bt20 million a month.
