Hong Kong-based Ocean Park says a man killed by a coffin in its Buried Alive attraction entered the attraction’s backstage area by mistake.
On Sunday, The Nation published an AFP report that stated the 21-year-old man, identified only by his surname, Cheung, was hit by the coffin on Saturday.
AFP said staff found Cheung unconscious five minutes after he entered the attraction.
Ocean Park told The Nation in a statement that Cheung entered Buried Alive at around 2pm.
“The park’s first-aid team arrived at the scene shortly and the guest was duly transported by ambulance to the hospital, where he was later certified dead,” the park said in the statement.
“The Ocean Park management team sends our deepest condolences to his family and friends, and will ensure that needs of his family are appropriately addressed.
“The Park informed the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department (EMSD) immediately about the incident and has suspended the “Buried Alive” attraction right after the incident. We will work closely with EMSD on the investigation.”
