Lao tourists have expressed concerns about crossing the border from Thailand into Cambodia amid news of a potential armed conflict between Laos and Cambodia.

Sa Kaew Immigration Bureau superintendent Pol Col Benjaphol Rotsawad said some Lao tourists had mentioned their worries during border crossing inspections in Aranyaprathet district.

It was reported on Friday that the Cambodian prime minister, Hun Sen, had threatened to mobilise the armed forces against Lao troops on the two countries’ border in Cambodia’s Steung Treng province.

This followed claims that Laos had sent troops into Cambodia.

Benjaphol said that Thai officials had had discussions with the Cambodian Immigration Bureau at Poipet, and the Cambodians had made assurances that citizens would not be affected by any conflict.

“Cambodian Immigration assured us that the tourists in Cambodia will be safe,” he said. “The leaders of the two countries have already negotiated an end to the conflict, and Lao troops have withdrawn from the Cambodian border.”

Given this assurance, the Lao tourists felt relieved and decided to continue their journey into Cambodia.

Meanwhile, a large number of Thai tourists had also crossed the border at Aranyaprathet, Benjaphol said.
