A Chiang Rai man of Chinese Yunnan descent was arrested along with 7.5 kilograms of crystal meth or “ice” worth Bt5 million in Phuket during a sting operation on Sunday.
Police arrested Wanchai Sae-yang, 27, at a convenience store on Yaowarat Road in Muang Phuket and also seized 122 yaba pills, a pistol, and 100 bullets and a motorbike.
Wanchai was initially charged with having narcotics in his possession with intent to sell and illegal possession of a gun and ammunition.
The arrest stemmed from the arrest of Weerawuth Tarurak, 38, in Phuket’s Patong Beach area along with 50 yaba pills last Saturday.
Police learned that Weerawuth got the drugs from a gang that moved large amounts of narcotics from the North for sell in Phuket and vicinity. Officers conducted a sting operation to contact the alleged supplier Mongkol Sae-yang, 29, to buy 500 grams of “ice” for Bt700,000.
Mongkol had his younger brother and accomplice, Wanchai, delivered the 500 grams of “ice” to the undercover officer.
A subsequent search of Wanchai’s house in Soi Samakkhee 1 and another condominium unit yielded more “ice” and other evidence.
Police found that the gang had transported drugs via a private courier company to Phuket at about 54 kilograms per time. The last amount was in April and some had already been distributed to customers.
