Bangkok, Phuket and Chiang Mai have topped the list of destinations with the most “Gold” award-winning hotels in Thailand, according to the Hotels.com Loved by Guests Awards 2017 - “where the hotel guests are the judges”.

In all 42 properties across the country were judged, up from 41 last year.

Regionally, Hanoi, Siem Reap and Tokyo are the top-three destinations for prize-winning properties, while Bangkok and Chiang Mai rank sixth and ninth.

All the hotels from Thailand were named by guests as the best in seven categories - luxury, business, boutique, beach, family, spa and new.

The award is based on Hotels.com’s analysis of more than 25 million guest reviews, with 2,500 hotels across 87 countries being recognised as “truly outstanding”.

Those taking home the top prize of a Loved by Guests Gold Award achieved an average guest review rating of 4.7 or higher out of five.

According to Jessica Chuang, Hotels.com director regional marketing for greater China, Southeast Asia and India, said: “Hotels.com has over 25 million trusted, genuine guest reviews on its website and is seeing a shift in reviews, becoming a more powerful influence than official star ratings, especially as these can be read on travellers’ smartphones on the go.

“Thailand’s continuous outstanding performance in the Hotels.com Loved by Guests Gold awards reflects the country’s success in offering hotel and hospitality selections of the highest quality worthy of great reviews from guests worldwide.”

The recipients of the Gold awards in Thailand include giant chain hotels such as Mandarin Oriental, Siam Kempinski and The Peninsula.

However, it was Pimalai Resort and Spa on Koh Lanta that earned the highest guest score - 4.9.
