Hanoi - A half tonne of cats will be destroyed in northern Vietnam on suspicions they were smuggled from China, local media reported Friday.

Custom officials in the Quang Ninh province seized the animals Tuesday night from a truck after the driver failed to produce paperwork for the shipment, Thanh Nien newspaper reported.
The cats were to be destroyed, along with half a tonne of undocumented chickens recovered from a separate truck a few hours later, the officials were quoted as saying.
Under Vietnamese law, illegal imports are to be destroyed through crushing or burning, according to the Thanh Nien report.
Three tonnes of live cats were reportedly buried alive in January last year after being confiscated in Hanoi.
Cat meat is considered a delicacy, particularly in northern Vietnam, where it is called "little tiger" and is considered good luck. The meat is usually fried or barbecued and served at festive occasions or eaten as a snack with rice wine.
