National artist Suchart Sapsin, the founder of a shadow puppet folk museum, died Saturday morning at age 77. Relatives said he died peacefully of old age, and his funeral rites would be held at Wat Phra Mahathat Woramahawihan in Nakhon Si Thammarat.
Born on July 2, 1938, Suchart had played a key role in the conservation of nang talung – shadow puppetry. His troupe stuck strictly to tradition and did not use foreign musical instruments in its performances.
