Typhoon Neoguri kills 5 in Japan

Tokyo -- Five people were dead and 46 injured as Typhoon Neoguri brought torrential rains and strong winds to wide areas of the Japanese archipelago on Thursday, local media reported.

Two people were found dead after they were swept out to sea on Miyako Island, Okinawa prefecture, broadcaster NHK reported.
One person died after tumbling into a waterway during heavy rain early Thursday in Saiyo city, Ehime prefecture, around 500 kilometres west of Tokyo.
The Japan Meteorological Agency warned of thunder, tornadoes, mudslides, swollen rivers and high waves in central, western and southern Japan, although the strength of the storm's winds had lessened over the previous two days.
Thousands of households suffered power outages, while tens of thousands of residents of the largest, central island of Kyushu and the south-western island of Shikoku were advised to evacuate their homes, local media reported.
