Pheu Thai spokesman Prompong Nopparit denied a rumour that his party was behind the campaign against the "Bangkok shutdown".
He insisted that the party's members or the government have no part in the campaign, which could be initiated by any social groups.
"Affected by Suthep (Thaugsuban)'s movements, several silent groups have voiced their opposition, including students and lecturers. Some also complained to Pheu Thai they had to stock up food, in preparation for the shutdown which may extend for days. What's Suthep doing is anti-democratic," he said.
