Mercury plunges to minus 2C on Doi Inthanon

The mercury dropped to minus 2 degrees Celsius at the top of Doi Inthanon mountain in Chiang Mai on Thursday morning, with frost blanketing the peak.

Wasan Chanthep, assistant chief of Doi Inthanon National Park in Chiang Mai's Jom Thong district, said tourists were treated with a white blanket of frost on grass and leaves throughout the park.

He said the lowest temperature on top of the mountain was recorded at minus 2C early in the morning while the temperature at the Kiew Mae Pan viewpoint, where tourists view the sea of mist and the rising sun, was 2C.

The temperature at the park office midway up to the mountain was recorded at 8C.
