A deputy inspector of Sai Buri Police Station in Pattani was seriously injured in a gun ambush on Saturday night while returning home from a trip to Yala with his wife and two daughters.

As unknown gunmen hiding at the roadside opened fire on the family car in Ban Baloh (Moo 5), Tambon Pasae Yawo, Sai Buri district, only 300 metres from their home, at about 9pm

Ten shots were fired.

Pol Captain Boonyan Sanbakor sped away, but was hit in the kneecap and another bullet grazed his hip.

His 29-year-old wife and children ages two years and three months were unharmed.

The Ban Baloh village head rushed all of them to Saiburi Crown Prince Hospital, from which Boonyan was transferred to Pattani Hospital for surgery.

Police suspect the attack was part of the ongoing unrest in the southern border provinces, in which state officials are regularly targeted.
