A 10-YEAR-OLD striped dolphin and its baby were swept ashore by strong tides and were rescued from Khlong Son Beach on Koh Yao in Phang Nga province on Wednesday.

The 140cm-long baby was released back into the sea.

The 214-centimetre-long, 70-kilogram mother, who had an infected wound, was unable to balance itself or swim and could not be freed.

Officials from the Andaman Coastal Research Centre took the mother dolphin under their care and said it would require at least 5-6 days of treatment for the infection.
