The thief who blasted opened an ATM in Bangkok’s Prawet district early on Wednesday took away Bt314,100 in cash, Metropolitan Police chief Pol Lt-General Sanit Mahathavorn said.

Luckily for the thief, all CCTVs in the area – including the camera inside the Bangkok Bank ATM at the car park in front of the Tesco Lotus Krungthep Kreetha superstore in Saphan Sung subdistrict – were not functioning well, Sanit said.

He said the blast was not an act of terror but was done to steal money from the ATM.

The robber took the box containing Bt1,000 notes and Bt100 notes but apparently forgot about the box containing Bt500 notes.

Sanit said the robber definitely had knowledge about bomb making, but it was not yet known whether he was or had been a police or military officer.

Sanit said the robber used a black Honda Click motorcycle without a licence plate.

Pol Colonel Kamthorn Uicharoen, deputy commander of the Patrol and Special Operation Division, said the bomb was made with TNT and was detonated with a lit fuse. The bomb contained about 200 to 300 grams of explosives, he added.
