HEALTH experts from Laos and Thailand along with health officials under the Ministry of Health have held a meeting in Vientiane to discuss the provision of better healthcare in the field of internal medicine.
The two-day 4th Lao-Thai Internal Medicine Conference and 15th Lao Internal Medicine Conference, ended yesterday in Vientiane, was attended by Thai Internal Medicine Association representatives and health officials from both nations.
Participants discussed developments in the field while analysing the progress of past shared activities and future plans for cooperation.
Internal medicine is the medical speciality that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of adult diseases with practitioners specialising in this branch of medicine known as physicians.
President of the Lao Internal Medicine Association, Associate Prof Dr Bouachanh Rasachak speaking at the conference hailed the ongoing successful health sector cooperation between Laos and Thailand.
The workshop is playing an important role in developing the capacity and knowledge of diagnosis, treatment and disease prevention in internal medicine, he |said.
“Participants have been sharing their experiences of practical health issues relating to the development and international integration of the field,” Dr Bouachanh explained.
The cooperative workshop was aiming to develop the capacity and knowledge of medical staff, including nurses and doctors in this field aiming to guaranty the quality of health services, he added.
In addition, health equity funds have been set up to assist poor patients and there have been improvements in the capacity of medical staff.
He explained that over recent years, the Lao and Thai health sectors have improved their cooperation which had aided treatment and services for patients.
Participants have vowed to continue the cooperation to develop capacity and knowledge in technical medicine and other related fields while assisting each other with personnel training and joint health projects.
The first Lao-Thai Internal Medicine Conference was held in 2012 and since then the focus has been on strengthening the capacity of internal medicine diagnosis, treatment and disease prevention.
