EXTRA BANDWIDTH

The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) is considering determining that the spectrum range of 27,000 MHz - 28,000 MHz be used as an additional standard range for providing the 5G wireless broadband service.

The National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission’s (NBTC) secretary-general Takorn Tantasith said that the ITU is expected to make a final decision in August this year.

He added that globally the range was in current use for providing a satellite broadcasting service. He made the remark after attending a meeting in Switzerland of the ITU task group responsible for additional IMT (International Mobile Telecommunications) spectrum (5G). The ITU was concerned over the possible shortage of the spectrum bandwidth for offering a wireless broadband service in the future, he added.
