A large part of the Bt200 billion worth of funds owned by 7,000 local administrations could be used to support development projects in rural communities, Interior Minister General Anupong Paochinda said on Tuesday.

His comment came after Deputy Prime Minister Somkid Jatusripitak said on Monday that the government would next year focus on improving the rural economy by using funds owned by local governments around the country.

Anupong estimated that local administrations had accumulated funds worth about Bt200 billion, some Bt150 billion of which could be utilised for development projects while the rest would be reserved for emergency incidents and the welfare of the elderly and disabled.

Any such fund reallocation must be approved by the Cabinet, he added.
