Japanese automaker Nissan is hoping to dramatically increase its commercial vehicle sales after launching the 12th generation Navara pickup in Bangkok on Wednesday.
The global launch of the Navara, which feature new levels of comfort, convenience and advanced technologies, come amid a slowing Thai auto market that has plunged by more than 40 per cent in the first four months of 2014.
The Navara is assembled at Nissan’s new Bt11-billion factory and will be exported to global markets excluding North America, making Thailand the 1-tonne pickup truck production and export hub for Nissan.
Retail prices were not announced during the “global reveal” event, and will be released at the public launch on July 3.
Nissan proudly says the new pickup boasts highly competitive fuel economy, improved acceleration and easier operation, a more rigid and durable frame, as well as modern yet tough and strong design.
“Since we built our first pickup in 1933, more than 14 million customers around the globe have come to depend on a Nissan pickup to transport their families, workmates and cargo, sometimes in the toughest of circumstances,” Nissan Motor’s chief planning officer Andy Palmer said. “Nissan pickups are often the lifeblood of their communities, and they need a broader range of abilities than almost any other vehicle. Engineering a good one isn’t easy, but with the NP300 Navara, we’ve added to our accumulated 80 years of pickup know-how, delivering more comfort, convenience and SUV-inspired features, to build a great one,” he explained.
“The Nissan New NP300 Navara sets fresh benchmarks for performance, toughness, versatility and running costs – all the qualities that are critical for pickup users,” he added.
The new Navara is available in a wide range of body types and powertrain options according to individual market demands, through narrow- and wide-body types, king and double cab models, all-wheel drive and two-wheel drive versions.
In Thailand, the new Navara is available with two 2.5-litre twin-cam 16-valve turbocharged diesel engine choices producing 163ps/403Nm and 190ps/450Nm, respectively. Transmission choices include 7-speed automatic and 6-speed manual gearboxes that contribute to improved acceleration and fuel economy.
The Navara is also available with electronic assistance systems such as VDC (Vehicle Dynamic Control), ABLS (Active Brake Limited Slip), HAS (Hill Start Assist) and HDC (Hill Descent Control).
Offered inside the truck are multi-function steering wheel, high-resolution TFT instrument displays with access to compass and navigation support, a fuel economy indicator as well as “customisation features” that include language choices, alerts, maintenance reminders, and more.
