Japan to help control rising garbage in Phitsanulok province
The Japanese government, under its grant assistance for grassroots human security projects scheme (GGP), is providing Bt1.88 million for waste-management centres and promoting waste recycling in Samokhae sub-district in the Muang district of Phitsanulok province.
The Japanese ambassador and Thongmuan Phanthuri, chief administrator of the Subdistrict Administrative Organisation (SAO), jointly signed the funding contract for the project at the Japanese embassy.
As a result of economic development, Muang district, which lies close to tourist attractions, is experiencing rising amounts of waste generated by tourists and workers. The Samokhae SAO has limited capacity to dispose of and control this rising amount of garbage which is causing waste to accumulate and pollute the environment.
In order to deal with the problem, close cooperation between the Samokhae SAO and local residents is essential. The SAO is planning activities such as a campaign on sorting and disposing of household garbage, holding seminars on trading recyclable waste and training on making products from recycled waste. In addition, they plan to build a waste-management centre as a learning facility for local people.
Japan has provided funding for the training and construction of the waste-management centre. Local people are expected to gain awareness on waste management and recycling to reduce the amount of garbage, leading to a better quality of life and a cleaner environment.
