Franchises urged to think international

The Business Development Department will select a hundred leading franchise businesses to attend a franchise exhibition at the Commerce Ministry this month in an attempt to encourage more enterprises to expand overseas.

Asean in particular has been earmarked under the project because of full integration under the Asean Economic Community coming next year.

Pongpun Gearaviriyapun, director-general of the department, said many franchise enterprises had high potential to expand abroad. However, she said that because most were small or medium-sized enterprises, they lacked the knowledge and financial liquidity to expand overseas.

The department will help them find the right partners and teach them about expanding into other countries.

Under the Asean Framework Agreement on Services, a franchise is one of the businesses that Asean countries are committed to liberalise. Asean will help franchise businesses expand in each nation.

Thai franchises with overseas potential include restaurants and beverage, construction, home-decor, and construction businesses as well as bakeries, spas and educational institutes. Pongpun said many franchises should explore Asean markets as Thai products were highly popular in the region.

She said franchises could contract an Asean franchise or find a partner in another country.

To support franchises, the department will stage the "4 Decades Thai Franchise" exhibition on August 28 and 29 at the Commerce Ministry.

At the event, the hundred franchises will sell and exhibit their products and services, while the department will hold a seminar on expanding overseas.
