Amid high concern over the global economic recovery, the International Trade Promotion Department has set up working committees to draw up stringent strategies for promoting exports to five potential markets.
They are Asean, China, the Middle East, Russia and the Commonwealth of Independent States (CIS), and Africa.
Nuntawan Sakuntanaga, director-general of the department, said that the committees had been set up to target each market and urgently promote exports to them.
The committees include representatives from the department and he private sector.
The head of each committee was nominated by Thai trade counsellors experienced in foreign markets and who are based in the targeted markets.
Representatives on the committees from the private sector include members of the Board of Trade of Thailand, the Federation of the Thai Industries and the Thai National Shippers Council.
The key activities that the department will emphasise include providing business-matching for Thai traders and foreign importers in each country.
The department will also lead Thai traders on trade missions to fairs in targeted markets, while encouraging foreign traders to participate in international exhibitions in Thailand.
This year the department’s promotional plans will be emphasised for Asean member states, particularly Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar and Vietnam to leverage their emerging economic growth and high demand for Thai products and services.
The department will organise “Thailand Week” to promote Thai products in key cities in Asean, as well as cooperate with local department stores to launch in-store promotions.
Despite slowing economic growth in China this year, the department will continue to promote more exports to the world’s second-biggest economy.
Nuntawan said that although China’s economy was growing more slowly than in previous years, the market still had high purchasing power.
The department’s promotional plans will be focused on emerging cities in China in the western region and east coast.
To promote exports to the Middle East, Latin America, Russia and the CIS, and Africa, the department will categorise potential products for each market and will focus on promoting those products via trade fairs.
The department will also encourage more Thai exporters to reap benefits under free-trade agreements with many countries, such as Asean states, Chile, Peru, India and China, so that they will have a better competitive edge.
