EMC has introduced the EMC Isilon storage platform to help transform Thailand's media and entertainment industry from analogue to digital.
It expects to see the media and entertainment industry investing in new technologies the most as companies move to replace existing legacy systems. Charles Sevior, chief technology officer of the EMC Isilon Storage Division for Asia-Pacific, said that all media content today was acquired, preserved, manipulated and distributed in the form of digital files while a lot more people consumed media content in the digital domain.
That applied to real-time streams and a buffered series of streamlets.
“Storage architecture to support these requirements and business growth is critical,” he said.
“In the media and entertainment industries, we recommend EMC Isilon, which is low-cost storage but supports media companies to provide digital TV across platforms that include free-to-air, pay TV, cable TV, and IPTV … [and] not only TV and PC, but also tablet and smartphones.”
He said the switch to digital television meant people working in the media and entertainment industry needed more technical training, with new file-based workflow, file-naming conventions and automated functions now employed along with platforms that could seamlessly grow to support business requirements and new opportunities were required.
He said the five main areas in the media industry that this applied to were multi-platform content delivery, file-based tapeless workflows, internet protocol, networking, content delivery networks and the transition to high definition.
Sevior said that in Australia a large broadcasting firm invested US$25 million (Bt800 million) to transform from analog to the digital TV platform. In Thailand, he expects that each broadcaster might invest around $10 million to transform to digital TV in three years.
“Now we already have a couple of customers in Thailand. They are the companies who got the digital TV licences,” he said.
“We work very closely with partners to introduce our solutions – and not only broadcasters but all media companies in Thailand.” Sevior said EMC Isilon had more than 4,000 customers, of which around 1,000 were media and broadcast firms.
