Tigerair buys 37 Airbus A320neo, option for 13

Singapore budget carrier Tigerair will buy 37 Airbus A320neo (new engine option) planes with a catalogue price of US$3.8 billion (Bt123 billion).

Tigerair, which is 40 per cent owned by Singapore Airlines, said in a statement yesterday that it also had the option to buy up to 13 aircraft and to convert the A320neo planes to the bigger A321neo model. Delivery will run from 2018-25,

As part of the deal, Tigerair's order for nine A320s, which were part of a bigger 2007 order, will be cancelled. The carrier said the A320neo had a long flight range that would enable it "to fly to new and promising destinations". - Agence France-Presse.

PTT attends Gastech for new opportunities

PTT Group is taking part in the 42nd Gastech international conference and exhibition for natural and petroleum gas ending on Thursday in Goyang, South Korea.

SET falls on earnings concerns

The Stock Exchange of Thailand (SET) Index yesterday closed down 10.6 points to 1,349.90, lagging behind other indexes in Asia, which rose after seeing losses last week. Investors in the Kingdom were concerned over the potential impact of the prolonged political upheaval on listed companies' earnings.

Yesterday's trading volume was Bt27.75 billion.

Local brokerage houses were concerned that the listed companies' earnings might be lower if the formation of a new government was delayed, as the caretaker government cannot renew the cut in the corporate income tax from 30 per cent to 20 per cent. The cut expires at the end of this year.

Meanwhile, many research houses have downgraded their forecasts for the country's economic growth rate after the Constitutional Court nullified the February 2 general election. The main reason cited by the houses was that the ruling has diminished people's expectation of a new government being formed in the first half of this year, which would delay the implementation of state agencies' economic stimulus plans.

Asia Plus Securities said the listed companies' earnings totalled Bt770 billion last year. If the 30-per-cent rate of corporate income tax returns, the earnings could be cut to Bt670 billion, the securities firm said.

Trial for digital terrestrial TV

Households with compatible devices will be able to view terrestrial-based digital TV programmes in four provinces during the broadcast trial from April 1-24.

The programmes will also be shown on cable and satellite TV, said Natee Sukonrat, chairman of the broadcasting committee of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC).

The committee yesterday allowed three of the four digital TV networks belonging to the Army, MCOT and Thai PBS to start testing before it grants licences to all 24 commercial digital TV channels on April 25.

The other network operated by the Public Relations Department has yet to apply to take part in the project.

The trial service will be on a non-commercial basis.

The holders of digital TV broadcast licences, which have their own cable and satellite TV channels, are all expected to take part in the test.

The committee also asked satellite operator Thaicom to take part in this trial by beaming the digital TV programmes to satellite and cable TV operators so that they can provide the programmes to their subscribers.
