Aor Tor Kor market to be Styrofoam-free
The Marketing Organisation for Farmers (MOF) is campaigning for the zero use of Styrofoam at its famous fresh market in Chatuchak commonly known as Aor Tor Kor, to reduce environmental and health problems caused by the Styrofoam.
Starting from this month, the MOF would promote the use of biodegradable boxes, made from bagasses.
Kamolvis Kaewfaek, acting director of the organisation, said that Styrofoam with low resistance to heat and hot oil generates styrene monomer, which is one of the carcinogenic substances. Moreover, Styrofoam also requires a long time for disposal. Meanwhile, bagasses-made boxes can be put into a microwave without causing any harm to health condition and they degrade naturally within 45 days.
He said that the campaign is to make the market a role model for others. To achieve the 100 per cent Styrofoam-free target, bagasses-box makers have been approached for a mass production. Samples were distributed to vendors along with information of the new container.
