Wall St ends up

US stocks fell on disappointing corporate earnings and rise in first time jobless claims. The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 49.84 points to 13,860.58. The S&P 500 index fell 3.85 points to 1,498.11, while the Nadsaq composite dropped 0.18 point to 3,142.

The S&P 500 posted its best monthly gain since October 2011, advancing 5.1 per cent in January as investors cheered a compromise that temporarily postponed the impact of the "fiscal cliff".

The Dow gained 5.8 per cent and the Nasdaq rose 4.1 per cent for January 2013.
