US' Kerry to seek greater engagement in Philippines during visit

Manila - US Secretary of State John Kerry arrived in the Philippines Tuesday to discuss economic and security issues, and visit areas worst hit by Typhoon Haiyan in early November.

Kerry is due to meet President Benigno Aquino and Foreign Secretary Albert del Rosario during his visit, officials said.

"We are trying to modernize our alliance with the Philippines in ways that bolster the US ability to respond to disasters and respond to crises," a senior US state department official said prior to Kerry’s visit.//DPA
