Toyota's hydrogen fuel-cell can power a home too

Hamburg - Toyota's innovative fuel-cell car, which is due to goon sale in 2015, can also be used as generator to power lights and appliances in an average private home.

Mated to an external device, the hydrogen FCV could charge a house for up to a week in case of an emergency, said a Toyota spokesman.

He was speaking at a presentation in the German port city of Hamburg, where hydrogen fuel-cell buses have been in test use.

The FCV’s fuel stacks create electricity and water by combining oxygen and hydrogen. The batteries can store around 100 kilowatts of power which could be diverted from a fuel-cell car parked in the garage to keep domestic appliances running.

With its twin tanks filled with hydrogen, Toyota says the car has a range of 300 miles.

The FCV was shown earlier this year at the Consumer Electronics Show(CES) in Las Vegas.
