Strong quake hits south Peru

Lima - A powerful earthquake hit southern Peru on Sunday, with no immediate reports of damage or casualties.

The magnitude of the quake was measured at 6.9 by the US Geological Survey, and at 6.6 by the Geophysical Institute in Peru.

Residents in the sparsely-populated region left their houses in panic as the quake struck, local media reported.

The tremor was also felt in the capital Lima, hundreds of kilometres away.
