Spain's reign ends as Chile send holders out of World Cup

Riode Janeiro - Holders Spain crash out of the World Cup with a 2-0 defeat to Chile, who progress to the knock-out stage with the Netherlands.

First-half goals from Eduardo Vargas and Charles Aranguiz inflicted a second defeat on the current world champions following their 5-1 loss to the Netherlands and ended a six-year spell at the top of the game.

Although Spain still have Australia to play, neither of the two can now reach the last 16, and Spain now follow Italy in 2010 as title holders who go out in the group stage.

Spain fell behind in the 20th minute when Aranguiz found an unmarked Eduardo Vargas for the Valencia striker to score.

Aranguiz made it two in the 43rd minute with a toe-poke past Iker Casillas in goal after the keeper could only parry Alexis Sanchez’s free-kick straight back into the penalty area.
