Singapore to deport 53 migrant workers following riot

Singaporean authorities have charged 28 foreign workers and will deport another 53 believed to have been involved in the island's worst rioting in decades, reports said Wednesday.

The riot occurred in the Little India district on December 8, following the death of an Indian labourer who was hit by a bus.

Hundreds of migrant workers from India and Bangladesh clashed with police and set fire to vehicles before officers in riot gear -including members of an elite Gurkha police unit - quelled the unrest.

On Tuesday, police said that 28 "active participants" in the riot would be charged and another 53 are currently detained and would soon be repatriated. Of these, 52 are Indian nationals and one is from Bangladesh.

Around 200 others have been called in to help with investigations, and will receive formal police warnings.//DPA
