Washington - Former Pennsylvania senator Rick Santorum was headed to victory in the Republican presidential primary in the Southern state of Tennessee, his first victory among the 10 states voting on "Super Tuesday."

He had 44 per cent of the vote with 2 per cent of precincts reporting. Exit polls had already showed Santorum with a strong lead, and CNN and other broadcasters declared him the victor.

He emerged in February as the top rival to Republican presidential front runner Mitt Romney, who was in second place in Tennessee with 28 percent in the early results.//DPA
