Policeman, protesters to be charged in alleged shooting, assault

A police officer accused of shooting at a crowd of anti-government protesters, and a group of protesters who reportedly attacked the officer following the shooting, will all be charged over the incident, Bangkok police chief Pol Lt-General Camronwit Toopgrajank said Wednesday.

The protesters would be charged with assaulting Pol Sr Sgt-Major Khongphet Phetkanha, and he will be charged with firing on the crowd, the police chief said. Details of the charges, and whether they would be filed individually against the protesters, would be decided soon, he added.

Khongphet is now safe but still unable to provide a statement. Camronwit said the officer had been assigned to gather intelligence at a rally site in front of the Army Club, where anti-government protesters had gathered and threatened to enter the compound to disrupt an important meeting between Election Commission members and key government figures.
