Kuala Lumpur - US President Barack Obama vows to support Prime Minister Najib Razak's efforts to push for more reforms in the areas of human rights, press freedom and civil liberties in Malaysia.

"I'm going to continue to encourage him as a friend and a partner to make sure he makes progress on that front," he said in a press briefing in Kuala Lumpur.
"And I think the prime minister is the first to acknowledge that Malaysia's still got some work to do."
Human rights advocates have criticised the Malaysian government for suppressing political dissent in Malaysia to protect its hold on power.
