Porto Alegre, Brazil (dpa) - The Netherlands came from behind to beat Australia 3-2 at the World Cup on Wednesday, a result that saw them into the knock-out stages because Chile beat holders Spain 2-0 later in the day.

Memphis Depay rifled in a 68th-minute winner from outside the box, prompting jubilation among Dutch fans at the Beira-Rio stadium, including King Willem-Alexander and Queen Maxima.

It was a particularly cruel blow for Australia, who had themselves missed a glorious chance to go 3-2 up just 60 seconds earlier when striker Mathew Leckie chested a cross from Tommy Oar straight into the hands of keeper Jasper Cillessen.

The Dutch took an early lead from Arjen Robben's third goal of the tournament but Australia rallied from Tim Cahill's stunning volley and a penalty by Mile Jedinak. Robin van Persie also got his third of the competition to level at 2-2 before Depay clinched victory.
