Yangon -- Several protesters have been injured when riot police fired tear gas and water cannon this morning at the China-backed Lapadaungtaung copper mine project in central Myanmar.
Local residents and monks have cleared out of three camps out of six camps set up in the area of the copper mine project after the riot police moved in to take control.
The Ministry of Home Affairs issued an order on Tuesday to vacate the area by midnight, but the protesters refused to disperse claiming there has been no response to their demands.
Yesterday, the riot police announced that actions will be taken according to police procedure and law if the camps were not vacated by midnight. They reiterated their warnings three times on Wednesday night before they raided the camps at 3 am this morning.
