Buenos Aires - US heavy metal band Metallica plans to play in Antarctica in December on King George Island in the South Shetland Islands.
It won't be as loud as a typical Metallica concert, though. In order to protect the quiet environment on the island, the show will feature no amplifiers: the audience at the site will hear it through headphones.
The concert is to take place December 8 on the Argentine Antarctic Base Carlini, 120 kilometres off the mainland of Antarctica.
"After over 30 years as a band, we have been unbelievably fortunate to visit just about every corner of the earth ... except for one," Metallica said in their website. "That is all about to change as we are set travel to Antarctica, the only continent that Metallica has never played on until now!!"
The winners of a contest organized by Coca-Cola Zero for music fans from Argentina, Chile, Mexico, Colombia and Costa Rica will get to attend the show. To take part in the contest, those interested need to say on Twitter "what impossible actions" they would be willing to undertake in order to go to the concert. A jury will pick 10 winners from the best plans.
The concert also will be broadcast online for Metallica fans around the world.//DPA
