Kuala Lumpur - A local man was sentenced to death Wednesday for the murder of a French tourist three years ago in a resort island south-east of the Malaysian capital.
Asni Omar, 39, was found guilty by the Kuantan High Court of killing Stephanie Foray, 30, in Tioman Island, 240 kilometres south-east of Kuala Lumpur, in May 2011.
Asni runs a shop on the island selling and renting out beach gear.
Witnesses told the court the victim was last seen with the convict on the evening of May 10, 2011. Foray was not seen again until her remains were found in a nearby cave nearly three months later.
Police investigators testified they found bloodstains from the victim in Asni's hut.
No motive was conclusively found, but prosecutors speculated Asni may have killed the victim after she spurned his sexual advances.
