Tokyo - Residents on southern Japanese islands were advised to be on maximum alert early Tuesday as a powerful typhoon approached the region.

Typhoon Neoguri is expected to pick up more power before it makes landfall, the Japan Meteorological Agency said, as it issued an storm surge warning for Miyako Island in the southern prefecture of Okinawa and neighbouring islets.

Neoguri, the eighth typhoon of the season, was 90 kilometres east of Miyako Island as of 8 am (2300 GMT Monday), travelling north at a speed of 20 kilometres per hour, the agency said.

The typhoon had maximum sustained winds of 180 kph and gusts of 252 kph, the agency said.
