Seoul - The ill-fated South Korean ferry was being steered by the third mate when it ran aground and sank, a news report cited investigators as saying.

"We have confirmed that the captain of the Sewol left the wheel to a third mate before the ship began sinking," chief investigator Park Jae Eok was quoted as saying by Yonhap News Agency.
Investigators were looking into where on the boat the captain was at the time of the accident, he said.
The report cited coast guard officials saying they may seek an arrest warrant for the captain Lee Jun Seok, 69.
