FORMER prime minister Banharn Silpa-archa, a political veteran and the most-loved politician of Suphan Buri, died at the Siriraj Hospital early Saturday. He was 83 years old.
Banharn was admitted to Siriraj Hospital early Thursday morning. He was suffering from his chronic asthma, exhibiting symptoms of breathing difficulty and discomfort in the chest.
The former Chart Thai Party leader died at 4:42 am.
He remained in critical condition and under intensive care since his admittance to the hospital.
The hospital held a press conference at 9 am to announce his death.
An 11-time member of Parliament, Banharn represented his home province of Suphan Buri and is credited for its rapid growth and development.
He led the Chart Thai Party until it was dissolved by the court after an executive was convicted of buying votes. His new party later joined the earlier-split Chart Pattana to become the Chart Thai Pattana and he remained as the chief advisor to the party leader although he was regarded as the most powerful politician in the party.
A royal bathing rite for the 21st prime minister of Thailand would be held at the Thepsirin Temple at 5 pm. Praying rites will be held at the temple for ten nights at 7 pm.
