Farmers in five provinces Tuesday blocked the main highway in Phichit, demanding for payment under the rice-pledging scheme by January 15.
They made three demands.
First, all farmers must be paid for their rice by January 15.
Second, the government must shoulder the interest rate, levied on loans extended by the Bank for Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives (BAAC) to farmers under the scheme.
Third, the debt repayment period must be extended by a year without any interest.
Kittisak Rattanavaraha, the leader of the northern farmers, said that if there is no response farmers would step up their actions, to oust the government.
