The Criminal Court Thursday sentenced a former Border Patrol Police officer to seven years in prison and each of his four police subordinates to five years for abuse of authority and assault.

Pol Captain Nat Chonnitiwanich was found guilty of abuse of authority and assault, while the four former police sergeant majors – Niran Taemchuay, Rangsiman Sukkaew, Panang or Jakrin Duangkamol and Apisak Polsawat – were found guilty of abuse of authority. The lawsuit stated that on January 6-7, 2007 Nat and his team arrested a couple for alleged possession of 20 yaba pills and detained them in Nakhon Si Thammarat, where they tortured them to obtained confessions and extorted Bt200,000 from them in exchange for their release. The couple, whom Nat’s team turned over to police to face legal action, was later acquitted of the drugs charge by a court.
